Newseum Opens 'Pictures Of The Year' Exhibit In D.C.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Newseum is opening its "Pictures of the Year" exhibit to showcase some of the best photojournalism from 2013.

The exhibit opening Friday includes images from last year's biggest news stories, including the war in Syria and the Boston Marathon bombing. There are also lighter moments, such as Detroit Tigers player Torii Hunter flipping over the wall at Boston's Fenway Park.

The exhibit features the work of New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks from when Islamist militants stormed a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The photographs won first place in the Pictures of the Year International contest and more recently the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography.

The Newseum is hosting a "photo day" Saturday featuring speakers and a photo scavenger hunt. The exhibit is on view until Sept. 1.
