New Music Composition To Be Performed At Jefferson Memorial

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new music composition is making its Washington premiere with performances at two parks and the Jefferson Memorial.

Washington Performing Arts co-commissioned the piece entitled "Sila: The Breath of the World" by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams. The 70-minute piece involves wind instruments, percussion, strings and voices.

"Sila" is inspired by the Inuit tradition of the spirit that animates all things. In each performance, U.S. Air Force Band musicians will be dispersed widely, playing as soloists with no conductor.

The piece will be performed Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Meridian Hill Park featuring brass and percussion. A performance Friday at 6 p.m. at the National Mall's Constitution Gardens will feature woodwinds, strings and voices. A Saturday performance at 3 p.m. at the Jefferson Memorial will feature the full ensemble.
