NCAA Asks Judge To Seal Documents In Wrongful-death Lawsuit
ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- The NCAA has asked a Montgomery County judge to seal 14 documents in a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of former Frostburg State University football player Derek Sheely.
The Los Angeles Times reports the NCAA says that the release of the documents, which deal with the NCAA's response to concussions, could be "harmful to the NCAA's legitimate business interests," according to court records.
Attorneys for the Sheely family last week said the NCAA is trying to protect itself from "embarrassment and shame."
The NCAA didn't respond to the newspaper's request for comment.
In 2011, Sheely, a fullback at the Maryland Division III school, collapsed during a preseason practice and later died from a brain injury. In 2013, his family sued the NCAA, two coaches and a university athletic trainer.
