Mount St. Mary's Files Lawsuit Against School With Same Name

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Los Angeles-based Mount Saint Mary's University.

The Daily Record reports the lawsuit, filed June 17, says the Maryland school twice asked the Los Angeles school to cease using its name, but the institution refused both times.

The lawsuit says the California university began using the name in January. The lawsuit says the change already has confused students and prospective students of the Maryland institution about whether the two unrelated schools are affiliated.

Debbie Ream, director of communications and marketing at the Los Angeles school, says the university has no comment on the lawsuit because it is under review by university counsel.

Both the Maryland and California schools are relatively small Catholic liberal arts universities.
