Mom Facing Murder, Arson Charges After Son Found Dead In Car Fire

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WJZ/AP) —The mother of the 5-year-old boy who was found dead in a burning car in June, is now facing homicide charges, according to authorities on Friday.

On June 16, authorities responded to car fire near westbound Sam Eig Highway around 3:30 a.m in Gaithersburg,

Emergency crews went to help the mother, Narges Shafeirad, when she told first responders that someone was inside the car. Rescuers were unable to remove the child from the vehicle in time to save his life.

According to WUSA9, authorities announced charges against Narges Shafeirad on Friday morning, including first degree murder and arson, in the death of her son, 5-year-old Daniel Dana.

Police say Daniel Dana was murdered before the car caught fire on that morning in June. WUSA9 reports that Shafeirad is accused of overdosing her son with diphenhydramine, which can be found in over-the-counter medications such as Benedryl.

Police say Shafeirad is currently located at an undisclosed medical facility where she will formally be charged soon.

Divorce plans between Shafeirad and Daan's father were underway before the fatal crash.
