Mizeur Gets Backing Of National Liberal Group

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Democracy for America, a national organization for progressive politics, is endorsing Del. Heather Mizeur's bid for Maryland governor.

Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont, founded the organization in 2004. This is the organization's first gubernatorial endorsement for the 2014 political cycle.

Charles Chamberlain, executive director for Democracy for America, praised Mizeur for supporting a minimum wage hike and same-sex marriage rights. Mizeur is one of three candidates running in Maryland's June 24 Democratic primary. Also running are Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Maryland's attorney general, Douglas Gansler.

Democracy for America has about 1 million members nationwide and nearly 20,000 in Maryland. It brings fundraising and volunteer resources to those it endorses. The group says it has backed 802 liberal candidates in successful election bids.
