Michael Harrison Unanimously Confirmed By City Council, Will Be Next Baltimore City Police Commissioner
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The Baltimore City Council unanimously confirmed acting police commissioner Michael Harrison as its new police commissioner.
The 49-year-old assumed the role of acting police commissioner a month ago on an interim basis.
He was previously with the New Orleans Police department where he served for 26 years, most recently as superintendent.
Harrison released a statement Monday afternoon following his confirmation:
"I am very excited and grateful to have been confirmed and want to thank each of the City Council members for their vote. I expect a long and productive relationship with the City Council and am looking forward to working together to achieve our goals of reforming the Baltimore Police Department, reducing crime and rebuilding trust with the community."
Harrison said that he expects a healthy relationship with City Council in his time as Baltimore City Police Commissioner.
"I am looking forward to working together to achieve our goals of reforming the Baltimore Police Department, reducing crime and rebuilding trust within our community," he said.
Harrison knows the job will not be easy. He is the fourth police commissioner since Mayor Catherine Pugh took office in 2016.
"Michael Harrison is indeed, the right person, at the right time and in the right place to remake the Baltimore Police Department and restore community trust as our new police commissioner."
Harrison, who is also an ordained minister, will be paid $275,000 a year.
He will be sworn in Tuesday morning.
