Metro Transit Officer Pleads Guilty in Road Rage Incident
ASPEN HILL, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a veteran Metro Transit police officer has resigned and could be facing jail time following a road rage incident.
Montgomery County prosecutors say 39-year-old Steven Smith of Sykesville, Maryland, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of second-degree assault and one count of misconduct in office.
Prosecutors say Smith was driving April 12 when he became involved in an altercation with a driver in another vehicle.
At one point, authorities say Smith pulled out his service weapon, stating he was a police officer.
As part of the plea, Smith agreed to resign from Metro Transit Police, and will lose his pension. WRC-TV reports Smith had been a Metro Transit Police officer for the past 15 years.
His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 21.
Information on Smith's lawyer wasn't available immediately.
