Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens Holds 50th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Marylanders across the state take pause to remember those in our armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Day is an emotional day for many who served in the armed forces - and especially the families of those who were lost in the line of duty.

Surrounded by fields of American flags, a hero's tribute at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens remembering those who gave their lives, protecting their country.

"In the midst of battle, in the roar of conflict, they found the serenity of death," says Brigadier General Sean Case, with Maryland National Guard.

Dozens of families, friends, and grateful Marylanders paid tribute, alongside veterans like Ed Novak.

"I guess it's soul-searching day. You remember those people who are no longer with us, and you remember those people you served with," says Novack.

Four men from Maryland were killed in the line of duty in 2016. their short lives of service to their country - honored at Dulaney Valley.

"Specifically today, that's Nathan, Victor, Adam and Allan. Those four plaques right there. They gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can be here, enjoying this Maryland morning," says Astronaut Reid Wiseman.

The family of Airman 1st class Nathaniel McDavitt are still coping with his death one year ago, in the fight against ISIS.

"It's quite overwhelming. IT's very heart-touching that so many people have come out, that they're honoring my son and remembering him," says Nathan McDavitt's mothere Jeanette Middleton-Sudano.

As military members, lay a wreath to remember their own, Maryland commemorates its loyal military men and women gone too soon.

Service men and women killed this year, such as Staff Sergeant Marc De Alencar, who was killed last month in Afghanistan, will be honored at next year's Memorial Day ceremony.

Monday marks the 50th anniversary of the ceremony held in the Circle of Immortals.
