Memorial Service Held For Capital Gazette Victim John McNamara

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ) -- Inside a crowded chapel on the University of Maryland campus, hundreds of friends, family and fellow journalists honored John McNamara Tuesday morning.

McNamara was one of the five Capital Gazette staffers murdered inside their office less than two weeks ago.

He's the last to be memorialized.

"He had personality. He had work ethic, family values and a burning desire to be the very best writer he could be. And, he was. Everybody loved, everybody respected John McNamara," The voice of the Terps, Johnny Holliday, said.

The journalist and newspaper editors spent many years on the Maryland campus covering the Terps.

"You knew when you lost, it hurt, and when you won, he felt good about it. You knew he cared about Maryland," University of Maryland Men's Basketball Coach Mark Turgeon said.

Tuesday, those who knew him best also described McNamara as a loving husband and a straightforward reporter.

The 56-year-old was murdered in the Annapolis office where he'd spent more than two decades of his life covering sports, and most recently, news.

His accused killer, Jarrod Ramos, is facing five murder charges and is scheduled to be in court in late July.
