Measure Aims To Curtail Seafood Mislabeling

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A measure coming before Maryland lawmakers would provide more information about seafood that is purchased in the state.

The bill was introduced Wednesday by Del. Eric Luedtke, D-Montgomery.

It would require seafood to be properly identified on a label, sign or menu.

The measure also would prohibit a seller from knowingly mislabeling a species. For example, there would be stronger regulations for identifying the origin of crab meat.

That way, people will know whether they are eating a crab from Maryland waters.

Beth Lowell, campaign director for an organization focused on ocean conservation called Oceana, says consumers have the right to know more about their seafood. That includes what type of fish they are buying.
