Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland to Hold Fundraising Gala

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland serves more than 1 million meals per year to homebound seniors in the Baltimore area.

Now they're getting ready for a big annual event, the Hats & Horses Gala, that will help them continue to fulfill that mission.

They've set a goal for the event -- raising enough money for 29,000 of those meals.

Twenty of Baltimore's best chefs, including Pierpoint Restaurant Nancy Longo will be serving up great food for the benefit.

"I believe as a chef it's your job to feed everyone, whether they can afford to eat here or if they can't," she says. "Whether they need a meal because they're sick, or no one can come to take care of them, that's our job."

"Its so important because nutrition is inextricably linked to health," adds Stephanie Archer-Smith, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland. "The better your nutrition, the better your health. As people age and experience chronic illnesses their nutrition becomes even more critical."

The gala will be held May 23 at The Grand Lodge in Cockeysville. For ticket information, go to mealsonwheelsmd.org/Culinary.
