Md. Town's Arbor Day Trees Honor Civil War Dead

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. (AP) -- The western Maryland town of Williamsport is marking Arbor Day by planting 120 trees in memory of fallen Civil War soldiers.

Saturday's event at the Springfield Farm and Museum is part of a plan to dedicate 620,000 trees along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway.

The 180-mile corridor runs from Gettysburg, Pa., to Charlottesville, Va. Organizers announced in 2010 their plan to landscape the route with trees dedicated to those who fought and died in the War Between the States.

Maryland celebrates Arbor Day on Wednesday. Nebraska was the first state to proclaim a special day for planting trees.
