Md. Teens Prepare For Environmental Education Competition

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Maryland students are preparing for the first round of an environmental education competition.

"Over the past 25 years, more than 20,000 students have competed in the Maryland Envirothon," said Maryland Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. "This program provides teens with an exceptional opportunity to work with environmental experts in the field to better understand complex environmental issues facing our state and planet. Teens competing in the Envirothon represent the future of Maryland agriculture and our natural resources protection efforts."

Participating students are studying natural resources. They've identified and categorized living resources, done soil surveys and estimated wood yield from trees.

The Envirothon is June 17 and 18 at St. Mary's College. The winner will represent the state later this summer.

More than 250 US and Canadian students will compete for $100,000 in scholarships and prizes.
