Md. Student's 'Cultural Appropriation' Costume Goes Viral

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Maryland high school student posted a picture of himself "dressed like a thief" for his school's culture day on Twitter, explaining that his choice was because "white people steal everyone else's culture."

Josh Welch's photo has been retweeted more than 31,000 times and favorited more than 55,000 times.

The Huffington Post reports that the 17-year-old from Silver Spring considers himself "a huge advocate for social justice" and wanted to make a bold statement.

He has been tweeted by people on both sides of the issue -- those who agree with and applaud his statement about cultural appropriation and those who have called him ignorant about European heritage.
