Md. Stores Included in Staples Data Breach

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP/WJZ) --- Staple Inc. said nearly 1.2 million customer's payment cards may have been exposed during a security breach earlier this year, including three Maryland locations.

The three following Staples stores in Maryland have been included in the list of affected locations:

587 E. Ordnance Rd.

Glen Burnie, Md.

12008 Cherry Hill Rd.

Silver Spring, Md.

2950 Belcrest Center Dr.

Hyattsville, Md.

In October, the office supply retailer announced that it was looking into a potential cred card breach.

Criminals are believed to have allegedly obtained customer information at the above stores between August 10 through Sept. 16 of this year.  Staples said an investigation shows the criminals used malware to access information for transactions including cardholder names, payment card numbers, expiration dates and card verification codes.

The Framingham, Massachusetts-based company is offering free identity protection services, including credit monitoring, to customers who might be at risk.

The security breach affected different stores at different times between July and September.
