Md. State Park Finishing Post-Sandy Cleanup

THURMONT, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says it's reopening part of Cunningham Falls State Park near Thurmont after salvaging timber downed or damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

The agency said Tuesday it has reopened the Manor Area of the park after a nearly seven-week closure. The area includes the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace, campsites and hiking trails.

The DNR says the removal of dead and dying trees promotes natural regeneration, improves biodiversity and ensures visitor safety.
