Md. Police Seek Suspect In Fatal Shooting Of Special Needs Man

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A 20-year-old special needs man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in Hyattsville, according to Prince George's County Police.

The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Conrad Cole of Annapolis Road in Hyattsville.

At around 1:20 p.m., a group of individuals from a group home were walking on 69th Place near Greenvale Parkway to a nearby basketball court, Chief Hank Stawinski said at a news conference.

They encountered an individual in a car and a verbal altercation ensued.

"The special needs individual was not communicating clearly, apparently," Stawinski said, and the other person got a weapon and shot him a "number of times."

He later died.

According to Stawinski, there was a second person with the suspect at the time of the shooting.

Based on their investigation, police believe that person was shocked by the events that unfolded and tried to aid Cole before fleeing the scene when they heard police and rescue personnel approaching.

"I'm reaching out to that person directly," he said. "You're not directly accountable for this but you know what happened."

A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case.
