Md. Police, Politicians Show Support For Dallas After Deadly Shootings

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Local leaders are offering prayers for the city of Dallas as action is urged after a difficult week across the country.

George Solis has reaction from the tragedy that's gripped the nation.

From both presumptive presidential nominees to state and local leaders here in Maryland, at a time when words are difficult to come by, those that can speak are making sure every thought counts.

There was more tragedy this week, this time in Dallas.

Friday, both Republican and Democratic presumptive presidential nominees reacted.

"They're not just police officers; they're mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, sons and daughters," said Donald Trump.

"Let's start understanding, putting ourselves in each other's shoes again and really coming together as Americans to end this terrible violence," said Hillary Clinton.

US Attorney General Loretta Lynch called for calm, determined action after the attack. She also reached out to those who plan on future peaceful protests.

"Do not be discouraged by those who would use your lawful actions as a cover for their heinous violence," she said.

Across the country, support for the fallen officers continues to grow. In Maryland, Governor Larry Hogan has ordered all the state flags to fly at half staff.

Maryland Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger says in the wake of so much violence, change needs to happen but the priority at the moment is honoring all the victims.

"I hope situations like what occurred this week will make people take a second look and come together," he said.

Baltimore City Police Commissioner Kevin Davis issued a statement to WJZ that says in part, "Those who choose to commit crimes in the name of protest are only detracting from the mission of creating a safer city where everyone's rights are protected."

Police organizations are calling on all law enforcement to wear a black band, a mourning badge in memory of the fallen officers.

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake reacted today, sending condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy.
