Shovel Your Sidewalk...It's The Law

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- It's not only the neighborly thing to do but getting your sidewalk shoveled is also the law.

Mike Schuh has more.

It snowed and snowed and snowed some more. We quickly got used to the sound of shoveling--and a good thing, too. What they are doing is--in Baltimore County--following the law.

"Well, Baltimore County law says you have to shovel your sidewalks 24 hours after a snowstorm," said Jerry Chen.

So are there police or county employees looking for unshoveled sidewalks?

"We get notified. We are a complaint-driven department. We receive the complaints from the citizens and ask them to provide us with the exact address," said Chen. "We haven't had any citations but we have sent out about 200 letters."

Had there been any citations, the fine is $25. So far, the letter is doing its job.

Also part of that law is a section which states that you are not allowed to throw snow onto any paved portions of the street.
