Md. Native Maroulis Wins 1st Wrestling Gold For U.S. Women

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Another woman who hails from Maryland will bring home gold from Rio.

Helen Maroulis, a 24-year-old who grew up in Rockville, became the first woman to win a gold medal in wrestling in United States history on Thursday, CBSSports.com reports.

The win was quite unexpected, since she defeated 13-time world champ and three-time reigning Olympic champ in the 53kg freestyle class, Japan's Saori Yoshida.
