Md. Man Gets Probation For Tweeting Threats Against School

BELTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — A Maryland man who pleaded guilty to tweeting threats against a high school will spend two years on probation.

Alejandro Avelar pleaded guilty to making a threat of mass violence and was sentenced to three years behind bars, all of which was suspended. The 20-year-old will have to complete two years of probation and 100 hours of community service.

Authorities have said Avelar tweeted a threat against High Point High School in Beltsville on Nov. 15. He said that he would come to the school's stadium with an AK-47 and two pistols and armed with bombs. Avelar's attorney told WRC-TV that his client meant the tweet as a joke. The attorney said Avelar supported Donald Trump's election as president and demonstrators were demonstrating against it.
