Md. Man Arrested, Accused Of Kidnapping 6-Year-Old Daughter In Miss.

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) -- A six-year-old who police say was kidnapped from a Pascagoula, Mississippi, restaurant Wednesday night has been found safe in Butler County, Alabama. The child's father is behind bars, awaiting extradition.

Pascagoula Police Capt. Shannon Massey identified the father as Maurice Rentz Johnson, 33, from Clinton, Maryland. Authorities caught up with him on Interstate 65. Johnson was arrested about 8:30 p.m. at exit 114 in Butler County.

Massey said the child and his grandmother were at a restaurant Wednesday around 6 p.m. when Johnson took the child while the grandmother's back was turned. Massey said court records show Johnson was the non-custodial father of the child.

"The child is safe," Massey said.

He said a police detective picked up the grandmother after the arrest was made to take her to Butler County and reunite her with her grandson.

Massey said Johnson will remain in the custody of Alabama authorities until extradition is arranged.
