Md. Inmate Charged With Murdering Cellmate

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- A state prison inmate is charged with first-degree murder in the September beating death of his cellmate at the maximum-security Western Correctional Institution near Cumberland.

The Allegany County State's Attorney's Office says a grand jury indicted Darnell Thompson, 35, on Wednesday. He's accused of killing Jason Wallace.

Prosecutors say they're not aware of any dispute that might have prompted the attack.

Thompson is serving a life sentence for a 1996 murder conviction in Prince George's County.

Wallace, 29, was serving time for robbery and drug convictions in Harford County.

The state Division of Correction says Thompson is now incarcerated at the North Branch Correctional Institution, another maximum-security prison near Cumberland.
