Md. Grocery Store Chain, Mars, Going Out Of Business This Summer

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The local grocery store chain Mars will be closing up shop this summer citing declining sales.

Weis Markets plans to buy five of the Mars stores -- in Dundalk, Arbutus, Carney and Essex -- but there are no immediate plans for the remaining eight.

The stores will be closed effective July 31.

A statement by Mars chairman and CEO Chris D'Anna says the chain is making efforts to "backfill" the stores with other retailers to "create as many re-employment opportunities as possible."

"It has been an honor to serve the Baltimore community since 1943, but with the changing competitive environment, this became our only viable option," D'Anna writes. "We will always be grateful to our loyal customers and to our associates who serve them.
