Md. Governor Signs Bill Requiring Insurers To Fully Cover Some Birth Control

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Governor Larry Hogan signed a bill into law Tuesday that many say will provide the most comprehensive insurance coverage for contraception in the country.

The "Contraceptive Equity Act" requires insurers to fully cover some kinds of birth control, removing patient co-payments.

The law makes Maryland the first state to require insurance coverage for over-the-counter contraceptive medications, like the morning-after pill. It also eliminates co-payments for vasectomies.

The law applies to insurance plans regulated by the state of Maryland and expands the coverage already provided through Medicaid.

The "Contraceptive Equity Act" takes effect in January 2018.
