Md. Boy, 13, Accused Of Shooting Girl, 15, Had A Criminal Record

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a 13-year-old Frederick boy who allegedly shot a 15-year-old girl has a criminal record.

A Frederick County judge on Monday ordered the boy held at a juvenile facility until Aug. 5, when he is scheduled for the equivalent of a trial.

Prosecutors say the boy is too young to be charged as an adult for allegedly firing a handgun at random July 4, striking the girl in the leg as she walked through the Lucas Village neighborhood.

The Frederick News-Post reports that the boy had at least two earlier brushes with the law, for alleged theft and disturbing school activities.

Assistant State's Attorney Laura Wilt says authorities resolved both cases informally. She says the boy also was enrolled in a youthful offenders program but failed to finish.
