Md. Bankruptcy Halts Suit In Deadly Illinois Crash

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A wrongful death lawsuit stemming from a church van crash last year in Illinois is on hold because the pastors of the Baltimore church have declared bankruptcy.

Maryland attorney Jimmy Bell said Tuesday that the lawsuit he filed against Victory Outreach Baltimore on behalf of victim Andrew Canada's estate will be stayed until the bankruptcy of pastors Gerry and Melinda Bell is resolved.

The couple filed the petition June 26 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Baltimore, one day before the wrongful death case was filed in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

Their defense attorney didn't immediately respond to a phone call and email from The Associated Press.

Five Baltimore men were killed in 2013 when a 15-passenger van returning from a Victory Outreach International event in California careened off Interstate 70.
