Md. Attorney General's Office Challenges New Trial For Syed
BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) -- The Maryland Attorney General's Office filed a formal appeal Monday of a judge's ruling that overturned the murder conviction of Adnan Syed, whose case has become famous through the popular podcast "Serial".
Defense attorney C. Justin Brown, who's representing Syed, confirmed the state had filed its appeal. His client has been serving a life sentence since 2000, when he was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee.

Last month, Baltimore Circuit Judge Martin Welch ruled Syed was eligible for a new trial because his previous legal counsel was not effective.
Lee was found dead in a shallow grave in Baltimore's Leakin Park. One of Syed's friends claims that he even helped dig the hole to bury her.
The case has made national headlines after becoming the center of the popular podcast "Serial."
The podcast, which has been downloaded millions of times, examines the case and whether Syed was wrongfully convicted.
