McDaniel Student Charged After Making False Statement To Police
WESTMINSTER, Md. (WJZ) -- A student at McDaniel College is charged after lying to police.
Authorities say Matthew Hines, 21, told investigators he was the victim of attempted armed robbery a short time before shots were fired on campus.
Hines originally claimed three men in a grey van confronted him, but that he fled to a friend's apartment. One suspect reportedly had a knife.
When he was re-interviewed, detectives noticed inconsistencies.
Hines later admitted he was lying and that he was never actually the victim of a crime.
He's now charged with making a false statement to police.
"I am disappointed and saddened to learn of the charges brought against a member of our student community," said Beth Gerl, McDaniel Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.
According to Gerl, students are held accountable for their behavior both on- and off-campus. In addition to criminal charges, the college will take disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, Westminster Police are asking for the public's help identifying the suspect who fired shots on campus.
A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
