McDaniel College Penalizes Frat & Sorority For CMT Vs. BET Party

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- McDaniel College in Westminster says it's prohibiting parties for the rest of 2014 at a fraternity and sorority that held an event promoting racial and cultural stereotypes.

The Carroll County Times reported in its Thursday edition that the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority and Phi Delta Theta fraternity also must hold diversity awareness training for members next fall.

The action follows the school's investigation of an unapproved "CMT versus BET" party held off-campus in January. The men wore baggy clothing, chains and backward baseball caps inspired by Black Entertainment Television programs. The women wore cutoff shorts, plaid shirts and boots inspired by Country Music Television shows.

The sorority's national headquarters says it didn't sanction the party and doesn't condone such activity.

The fraternity says it supports the school's action.
