Md. Police Cracking Down On St. Paddy's Day Drunk Driving

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- In the midst of Saint Patrick's Day celebrations, police across the state are out in full force, cracking down on drunk driving.

Now through Sunday is one of the more dangerous times of the year out on the roads.

Rick Ritter has more on what's being done in both Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

In Baltimore City alone, there is a slew of DUI checkpoints Thursday night and throughout the weekend. The message is clear--if you're drinking, do not get behind the wheel.

As the sun goes down on Saint Patrick's Day, roadways become slammed with drunk drivers. Holiday celebrations that come the end of the night can easily land you behind bars.

"Absolutely do not drink and drive," said Det. Jeremy Silbert, Baltimore City Police Department.

That's the message from Baltimore City police, who increased foot patrols downtown. When the bars let out, they're promising DUI checkpoints for those who choose to get behind the wheel.

"They make the decision to be impaired and get behind the wheel of a car, and not only is it stupid, but it's dangerous," said Silbert.

It's not just in the city, but police statewide will be out Thursday night into the weekend, searching for impaired and aggressive drivers.

Last year, state police snagged more than 150 drunk drivers around St. Patrick's Day weekend--a holiday that means green in more than one way.

"It won't be unusual to see this all weekend," said Larry Tapscott, owner, The Harp Restaurant.

At The Harp in Perry Hall, hundreds pack it in--business Larry Tapscott depends on.

"These couple of days outdo almost three times what I would do at Christmas," he said.

A joyous tradition that can bring an entire culture together.

"It's unbelievable how this community comes out for Saint Paddy's Day," said Tapscott.

State police has each of its 23 barracks patrolling drunk drivers over the next few days.
