Maryland Zoo's Penguin Chicks Have Names

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Looks like those cute, new penguin chicks at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore finally have names.

People voted and with 909 out of 2,400 votes -- the penguin chicks were named Dawn and Hope.

Dawn was named in honor of the dishwashing detergent that is used to clean wild penguins and other birds caught in oil spills, while Hope was named for the Cape of Good hope in South Africa, which is home to Boulders Penguin Colony.

The penguins hatched in October and were the first born in the zoo's new Penguin Coast exhibit. They are being hand raised and will be a part of the zoo's embassy program -- meaning they'll travel to schools, camps and other places around Maryland to help children and adults learn more about penguins.
