Maryland Weather: Wintry mix possible later this week

Derek Beasley has your Monday night forecast

BALTIMORE -- Clouds that hung around the region during the day Monday will slowly clear by tonight.

Temperatures will drop well into the 20s across the region by Tuesday morning.

The skies will be mostly sunny on Tuesday.

After a chilly start, Maryland will rebound to the 40s by the afternoon.

Mostly clear skies can be expected Tuesday night with temperatures again dipping well into the 20s.

Clouds will increase across the region by late Wednesday.

Temperatures will reach the mid-40s by that afternoon, and it will be cold again Wednesday night.

How far the temperatures fall is contingent upon how early the clouds roll in on Wednesday night. Still, many locations will drop at or below freezing again.

On Thursday, a large storm system will approach the area. The WJZ weather team is issuing an Alert Day ahead of the anticipated wintry weather mix.

Precipitation will start as a wintry mix across areas west of Baltimore where temperatures will be cold enough to support snow, sleet and freezing rain.

A mix of sleet, freezing rain and rain will start the morning in the Baltimore area before transitioning to all rain by mid-morning.

Some icing will be possible mainly west of the city before temperatures become warm enough for rain.

Rain will become heavy at times during the day and into Thursday night.

Wintry weather will continue for Western Maryland into Thursday night and accumulations could be significant enough to cause travel problems.

All that precipitation will taper off by Friday morning, with clearing skies by afternoon.

The temperatures will reach near 50 degrees on Friday.

Rainfall totals areawide will total 1-2" by Friday morning, with the heaviest rain occurring from Baltimore and points southward into the Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland.

There is still a large amount of uncertainty as to how this event will evolve, so expect further adjustments and changes to the forecast.

Cooler weather will arrive in time for the weekend, and it will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy during that time.

Expect highs in the 30s with lows in the 20s and 30s. We remain dry into next week with the next chance for rain arriving next Wednesday.
