Maryland Weather: Code Red Extreme Heat Alert Extended To Thursday

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Extreme heat will continue in Maryland for the foreseeable future. Temperatures reached the mid 90's on Wednesday, but heat index values were much higher.

A Code Red Extreme Heat Alert has been extended to Thursday, July 23.

A heat advisory went into effect Wednesday at 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. for Carroll, Frederick, Harford, Howard, and Montgomery Counties as well as Baltimore City.

Much of Maryland saw severe thunderstorms move through Wednesday evening, leaving behind widespread damage and thousands without power.

More than 18,000 outages were reported at the peak of the storm. BGE said its crews served more than 1,300,000 customers.

People should drink plenty of water and try to stay out of the heat as much as possible to stay safe and minimize risk of heat illnesses. Pets and children should not be left unaccompanied in any parked cars due to the high temperatures.
