Firefighter Dies From Medical Emergency While Responding To Scene Of Fatal Crash
LIBERTYTOWN, MD. (WJZ) — A volunteer firefighter responding to the scene of a fatal crash near Libertytown in Frederick County Tuesday afternoon suffered a medical emergency and died, fire officials said.
Michael Powers, 70, a decades-long volunteer firefighter with the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Company, was clearing debris from the roadway after a crash when he suffered a medical emergency.
He was taken to an area hospital where he later died.
A procession escorted his body to the medical examiner's office in Baltimore on Tuesday.
The crash he was responding to happened at 12:54 p.m. at Unionville Road on Maryland Rt. 26, when a passenger vehicle collided with a tanker hauling water, Frederick County Fire said.
Route 26 was closed both ways for an extended period of time after the crash.
Maryland State Police said the crash killed one person and injured at least two others.
