Laurel Police Officer Discharged From Hospital After Being Shot While Serving Warrant For Attempted Murder Suspect

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Laurel police officer was shot Wednesday morning while serving an arrest warrant for an attempted murder suspect, authorities said.

The officer, identified only as a 35-year-old man with over six years at department, was taken to the hospital for treatment and was discharged hours later.

The Emergency Response Team of the Laurel Police Department around 6 a.m. was serving an arrest warrant at the 100 block of Bryan Court. Police said after the team breached the home, the lone occupant, identified as 23-year-old Christopher Simms, opened fire, striking the officer once in the arm.

The agency's emergency response team had announced its presence when the Simms opened fire, police said.

Simms was taken into custody without officers returning gunfire, police said. He faces a slew of charged including attempted first-degree murder, intentionally causing physical injury to a law enforcement officer and reckless endangerment.

"I am grateful for the courageous officers of the Laurel Police Department and their efforts to help keep the city of Laurel safe," said Laurel Mayor Craig Moe. "The entire city of Laurel is praying for the injured officer and his family."
