Maryland Motorist Charged In Fatal Hit-Run In West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Police in West Virginia say a Maryland motorist has been charged in the fatal hit-and-run of a man on a bicycle.

Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston says in a news release 39-year-old Ladon Garrett of Randallstown, Maryland, surrendered to detectives Monday.

The statement says 20-year-old Divante Coles of Morgantown was killed July 6 on state Route 7 when he was struck from behind by a vehicle, which left the scene.

Police on July 12 seized the vehicle believed to be involved in the incident after it was found abandoned in Harrison County. The vehicle was not registered to Garrett.

Garrett was charged under a 2010 law mandating a driver involved in an accident that results in injury or death must remain at the scene. Garrett was arraigned and released on $25,000 bond.
