Maryland Governor Proposes Budget Compromise
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Republican Gov. Larry Hogan has proposed a compromise that restores a significant portion of education funding sought by the Democratic-led Legislature.
Hogan made the proposal in a meeting with the Senate president and House speaker on Saturday.
It restores 75 percent of a fund that goes to Maryland jurisdictions where education costs more. Democrats had sought to restore all of it.
Hogan's proposal fully funds a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment for state employees. And it includes about $25 million for health programs.
The Republican governor also wants action on his legislative priorities, including a bill to help expand charter schools and tax relief on military personnel pensions. He also wants legislative support for a tax credit for small businesses and for people who donate to public or private schools.
