Maryland Casinos See Record Revenues In November

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Maryland casinos add a mark in the win column for the month of November.

Political reporter Pat Warren reports while Baltimore's Horseshoe Casino fell short of expectations, it contributed to record revenues.

"I like roulette," said one.

"I'm trying to shoot a little craps," said another.

"I played the slots," said a third.

Whatever your pick, Maryland casinos are in the chips, according to an industry report, and the November numbers appear to bear that out.

"We've been pleased with our results," said Rob Norton, Maryland Live! Casino.

Maryland's five casinos generated $90 million in November, up 35% from the same month last year. Maryland Live! raked in nearly $54 million and the Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore $23.4 million.

Baltimore's Horseshoe Casino fell short of the state's projections in its first months of operations but picked up in November.

"The market has grown 35% and the fact that that's not happening anywhere else in the country is a very positive story and we're glad we were able to bring that to Maryland," said Chad Barnhill, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore.

Both casinos, while competitive, think there's enough business to go around.

"We have two very distinct markets. Horseshoe is an urban casino located in the city; we're much more suburban," Norton said. "And I think there is a market for both of us and I think there's more distinction than people realized."

And both will have to make room for one more. MGM opens in National Harbor in 2016.

A study conducted for the American Gaming Association found gaming contributes $1.4 billion to the Maryland economy.
