BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore police have identified a man shot by a police officer.

Police identified the man as 23-year-old Jawan Jerome Richards. Police say he remains in the hospital with a non-life threatening injury, and will be charged with handgun violations and driving without a license upon his release.

Police say two officers were surveying the area Wednesday when they observed Richards and two others engaging in "suspicious activity" inside a van. Police say as the officers got out of their unmarked vehicle and approached the van, Richards quickly reversed the car, injuring one of the officers. Police say both officers fired their service weapons, and have been placed on administrative leave while the Special Investigation Response Team investigates.

The passengers inside the van have not yet been charged.
