Man Rescued from Sugarloaf Mountain After 75-foot fall

DICKERSON, Md. (AP/WJZ) -- The Maryland State Police helicopter crew has rescued a man that fell nearly 75 feet off Sugarloaf Mountain.

Officials say the rescue crew was dispatched shortly after 5 p.m. Monday after receiving a call from the Frederick County 911 Center regarding an injured hiker. The hiker was believed to have suffered a head injury and was unable to escape from the mountain's steep terrain.

The helicopter hovered about 200 feet above where the man was trapped and lowered rescue equipment. Rescuers strapped the man to an extrication platform, which was lifted by the helicopter. Police say that after being hoisted up, the man was treated on board and flown to a hospital.

Police have not released the name of the man or what caused the incident.
