Man Fatally Shot By Police In Gaithersburg ID'ed As 24-Year-old
GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) — Police in Maryland have released more details about an officer-involved shooting including the identity of the man shot and killed by police who said he displayed a handgun.
Late Saturday, the Montgomery County Police Department identified the man shot Friday in Gaithersburg as 24-year-old Kwamena Ocran. They said his address was unknown.
A department media representative didn't immediately respond to an email Sunday asking about Ocran's race.
A Montgomery County Police news release said that the Gaithersburg Police Department had received information that a man was armed with a handgun and investigated. Four plainclothes officers approached him and identified themselves as police as he was walking near an apartment complex and commercial businesses, according to the release.
The release said that he then fled and was pursued by officers. He was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say a handgun was recovered from the scene.
The identities of the police offices hadn't been released as of Sunday morning. As part of established procedure, the shooting is being investigated and findings will be reviewed by a prosecutor.
Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark Sroka said previously at a news conference that the man now identified as Ocran displayed a gun before one or more officers fired at him.
