Man Dies After Tree Falls On Him On Appalachian Trail

BRUNSWICK, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a man has died after a tree fell on him on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland.

Maryland Natural Resources police say they got a call about the tree hitting the man on Sunday morning. Natural Resources police spokeswoman Candy Thomson says officers reported to the Ed Garvey Shelter on the Appalachian Trail, where they recovered the man's body.

Thomson says the National Park Service is investigating the incident.

The shelter is in Washington County, within 10 miles of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Thomson says there were 10-12 people at the shelter when police arrived. She says wind speeds in the area were about 25 mph.
