Man Accused Of Selling Assault Rifles, Marijuana Sentenced

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland man who admitted to selling assault rifles and marijuana to an undercover officer has been sentenced.

The Frederick News-Post (http://bit.ly/1UYzrt8) reports that 25-year-old Daniel Allen Schumaker Jr. was sentenced to 18 months behind bars on Thursday.

Schumaker was arrested after authorities say he sold two assembled AR-15 rifles, which are illegal in Maryland, and a pound of marijuana to an undercover officer. He pleaded guilty to two counts of possession or sale of an assault weapon Jan. 20.

Schumaker told the court that he had been trying to provide for his family after his father died. He says he had a substance abuse problem that clouded his judgment.

Assistant State's Attorney Jacob Craven had argued for an eight-year sentence because of the severity of the crimes.
