Maine Holds On For 83-80 Win Over UMBC

BANGOR, Maine (AP) -- Xavier Pollard and Zarko Valjarevic scored 18 points each as Maine held on for an 83-80 victory over University of Maryland, Baltimore County Saturday afternoon.

UMBC had closed to 77-75 following a Chase Plummer jump shot, but Valjarevic quickly followed with a 3-pointer to extend the lead. UMBC made five free throws to close the gap to 81-80 with 55 seconds remaining.  Troy Reid-Knight sealed the victory with two free throws in the final 11 seconds. The Retrievers missed two 3-point attempts in the final five seconds.

Maine (5-16, 3-6 American East Conference), which won its second consecutive game for the first time this season, had a commanding 56-36 lead at the half. UMBC (7-15, 3-6), led by Chase Plumber with 23 points, started the second period with a 30-9 run to take the lead 66-65 with 8:12 remaining,

Rodney Elliot added 21 points for UMBC.
