Son Of Former University Of Maryland Coach Killed In Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A former head interim football coach at the University of Maryland and his family are in mourning.

Mike Locksley's son was shot and killed in Howard County. There is still little information on a suspect or motive.

Police say the victim was in the 5500 block of Harpers Farm Road after someone found him and then called 911.

Sunday night in Columbia, investigators say multiple people, possibly even a minor called police after they heard a gun shot.

"Harpers Farm Road. Kid said he saw someone get shot. Caller is a juvenile. The shot person is on the sidewalk. Suspect ran towards the back of the building," says police dispatcher.

The victim was Meiko Locksley, the son of Mike Locksley, a former University of Maryland interim head football coach.

Police say the 25-year-old victim was pronounced dead at Shock Trauma. People in the in the neighborhood were stunned."

"Any time any life is lost it's sad. When they are young like that, that's sad also. Especially over in this neighborhood, it's pretty quiet. Little things go on in the neighborhood but for somebody to get killed, it's really sad," says Anthony Lewis.

Locksley served as interim head coach at Maryland in 2015, after Randy Edsall was fired. After coaching at Maryland, Locksley started working with the University of Alabama football team.

That program's head coach reacted to the tragedy.

"I just want everyone to understand that our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike, Kia and the entire Locksley family. We will do everything we can to support Mike and his family during this time of tragedy," says Alabama football coach Nick Saban.

In the latest update, police said they had no additional details on a suspect or a motive.
