Local Teachers, U-Mich. Crew Will Dig for Mastodon Bones
MAYVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Teachers will be working with experts from the University of Michigan to dig for history in Tuscola County.
Bones of a mastodon were found in Mayville two years ago. Paleontologists will return to the site in October to dig for more bones, wash them and map the site.
The work is planned for Oct. 8-9 and Oct. 15-16.
The Fowler Center for Outdoor Learning owns the property and will have a hand in selecting teachers from the Thumb to join the project. The mastodon could be 13,000 years old.
University of Michigan paleontologist Daniel Fisher says the bones are 6 to 8 feet below ground. He believes hunters or scavengers may have stored mastodon meat at the bottom of a pond that no longer exists.
