Local Man Builds Altar For Pope

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The Pope's historic visit is the cause for much excitement in Maryland and the United States. Tuesday, Pope Francis will arrive in the United States for the first time.

A sturdy base for the holiest of structures.

"It's a good background for people to see the sign of God's presence," said one man. "The Basilica is so beautiful."

It took 12 carpenters hours to complete the task.

The altar is now at the outdoor stage, waiting for Pope Francis to deliver his Mass.

The altar and 13 other pieces of furniture were constructed for the Papal visit.

"It's amazing," said one onlooker.

The altar was designed by three architecture students at Catholic University but was built by a Maryland carpenter.
