Lawyer Guilty Of Bank Fraud Conspiracy In Deep Creek Deals
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A federal jury in Baltimore has convicted a western Maryland lawyer of bank fraud, conspiracy and making false statements about property deals in the Deep Creek Lake resort area.
The jury convicted 51-one-year-old Oakland attorney Angela Blythe on all four counts Friday after deliberating two days in U.S. District Court. The trial began Sept. 28.
She faces up to 120 years in prison at sentencing Dec. 14.
Blythe was the settlement attorney for fraudulent transactions allegedly perpetrated by Samuel VanSickle in Maryland and West Virginia from 2001 to 2005. VanSickle has pleaded not guilty. He's scheduled for a competency hearing Nov. 2.
Defendant Lewis Strosnider pleaded guilty in August to bank fraud conspiracy. He's awaiting sentencing.
The government is seeking forfeiture of $1.7 million in proceeds from the scheme.
